- Our government is divided into three branches by our constitution, executive, legislative and judicial powers. This division created “separation of powers”, which means that each of these distinct branches have limited power and each of them can control the other. Hence, the concept of “check and balances” came into action. One single branch does not have the commanding power or full authority over everything. The power each of these branches exercise needs to be balanced for a fair and just government.
